Studying in Bangalore: A Guide for Students from Nepal

Karnataka's nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, engineering and management colleges have admitted Nepali students for decades, and Bangalore hosts one of the largest Nepali student communities in India. The rules are simpler than for most other countries, but three things trip families up every year: the No Objection Certificate, degree recognition back home, and paying through agents. This guide covers each.

Entry and stay

Nepali citizens do not need a visa or a residence permit to study in India under the India–Nepal treaty. Students travel on a Nepali passport or citizenship certificate and register with the college; no Foreigners Regional Registration Office formalities apply to Nepali nationals.

The No Objection Certificate (NOC)

Nepal's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology issues a No Objection Certificate for study abroad. It is what allows a Nepali bank to remit tuition and living costs in foreign currency, and many Indian colleges ask for it at admission. Apply with the college's admission or offer letter, the fee structure, academic certificates and citizenship; the NOC names the college and programme, so obtain it after you have chosen the college and before paying fees.

Academic documents and equivalence

  • SEE (or SLC) and +2 (NEB) mark sheets, transcripts and character certificates; a provisional certificate if the final one is pending.
  • Migration certificate from the +2 board.
  • Most Karnataka universities accept NEB +2 as equivalent to Indian 10+2; where a college asks, the Association of Indian Universities issues an equivalence certificate.
  • Citizenship certificate and passport (or citizenship alone where accepted) as identity; a few passport-size photographs.
  • For nursing: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and the age and medical-fitness requirements of the Karnataka Nursing Council.

Nursing: check recognition before you enrol

This matters more than any other decision. To register with the Nepal Nursing Council after graduating, the programme should be recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and the college affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. On Eduvy, the approval pages list INC-recognised and RGUHS-affiliated colleges; confirm both on the college's own approval letters, and ask the Nepal Nursing Council about any programme you are unsure of.

Fees, money and living costs

Fees are charged in Indian rupees, at the same management-quota rates as Indian students in most Bangalore nursing and pharmacy colleges; some colleges quote a separate international fee for engineering and management. The Nepali rupee is pegged at 1.60 to the Indian rupee, so the conversion is predictable, but remittances above small amounts need the NOC. Hostel and mess in Bangalore typically cost between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 a month; the college pages on Eduvy list hostel and PG options with prices.

Agents and scams

  • Colleges publish their own fee structures; an agent quoting a different fee, a 'seat booking' charge or a cash 'donation' is a red flag.
  • Verify the college on eduvy.in, on the RGUHS and INC lists, and by calling the college's own admissions number, not a number the agent gives you.
  • Pay fees only to the college's bank account and keep every receipt.

Checklist

  1. Choose the course and shortlist colleges on Eduvy; for nursing, confirm INC recognition and RGUHS affiliation.
  2. Get the college's offer letter and fee structure in writing.
  3. Apply for the NOC in Kathmandu with those documents.
  4. Arrange the AIU equivalence certificate only if the college asks for it.
  5. Book the hostel and pay the first instalment to the college's account.

Common questions

Do Nepali students need a visa to study in Bangalore?

No. Nepali citizens can enter, live and study in India without a visa under the India–Nepal treaty. Carry your citizenship certificate or passport.

Is NEET required for B.Sc Nursing?

Not for most Karnataka private nursing colleges, which admit on 10+2 marks with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Confirm the college's route, since a few institutions ask for NEET or a KCET rank.

Will my Indian nursing degree be recognised in Nepal?

If the programme is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and the college is affiliated to RGUHS, the Nepal Nursing Council normally registers the qualification after its own examination and procedure. Verify with the council before enrolling.

How do I pay fees from Nepal?

Through a Nepali bank remittance backed by the NOC, or from an Indian account if a family member holds one. Fees are in Indian rupees; the Nepali rupee is pegged at 1.60 per INR.
