What Does “BSc (NEP)” Mean? The 4-Year NEP Degree Explained

Explainer · NEP 2020 degrees · reviewed 2026-11-07 by the Eduvy counselling team

“BSc (NEP)” means a BSc run on the National Education Policy 2020 structure. The UGC framework makes it a four-year degree with an exit after each year. One year earns a certificate, two a diploma, three a degree, and four an honours degree.

What does BSc (NEP) mean?

NEP 2020 says the undergraduate degree will be three or four years, with several exit options. It names the four-year multidisciplinary programme as the preferred option (UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework, quoting NEP 2020, as of 7 Nov 2026).

The UGC built its Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes on that policy. It adds flexible credits, a major and minors, and multiple entry and exit points.

A course marked “(NEP)” is one the college says follows this structure. Ask the college which year's regulations apply to your batch.

How many years is a BSc under NEP? Exit points explained

  • After year 1: a UG certificate, if you earned 40 credits and complete a 4-credit vocational course in the summer.
  • After year 2: a UG diploma, if you earned 80 credits and complete a 4-credit summer vocational course.
  • After year 3: a BSc degree in your major, with 120 credits.
  • After year 4: a BSc (Honours), with 160 credits.
  • Year 4 with research: students with 75% or more in the first six semesters can choose research. A 12-credit project within 160 credits earns BSc (Honours with Research).
  • If you leave with a certificate or diploma, you may re-enter within three years. The whole degree must be finished within seven years.

Credits, the Academic Bank of Credits and APAAR

In the UGC framework, a one-credit tutorial means one hour a week, or 15 hours in a 15-week semester. A one-credit practical means 30 hours.

The UGC says its Academic Bank of Credits regulations support these exits and re-entries.

The Academic Bank of Credits records your credits digitally. You reach it through your APAAR ID (ABC portal, as of 7 Nov 2026).

To create an APAAR ID, log in to DigiLocker and pick the education category. Then choose your institution, admission year and roll number, and submit.

School students may already have one. It is generated through UDISE against the student's PEN and pushed to their DigiLocker.

BSc CS with AI & ML under NEP: what the name means

Under the UGC framework, the degree is awarded in your major discipline. About half of your credits should come from core courses in the major.

A minor adds breadth. The UGC's example: an Economics major with at least 12 credits in Statistics earns a BA in Economics with a Minor in Statistics.

So for “BSc Computer Science with AI & ML”, ask whether AI & ML is a major, a minor or a set of electives. That decides how the degree is named.

Is the 4-year NEP degree followed in Karnataka?

We could not find a current official Karnataka notice on this when we checked on 7 Nov 2026. So we cannot say whether your college runs a three- or four-year BSc.

Ask the college in writing how many years the BSc runs, which exits it offers, and whether a fourth honours year is available.

The UGC framework says a department offering honours with research needs research facilities. It also needs at least two permanent faculty recognised as PhD supervisors.

What to ask the college before you join

  • Is this BSc three years or four years for my batch?
  • Which exit certificates does the university issue, and after which semester?
  • What is my major, and which minors can I take?
  • Does the college create APAAR IDs at admission, or should I make one myself?
  • What is the fee for each year, including a fourth year?

Checklist

  1. Ask whether the BSc is three or four years for your batch.
  2. Note your major and any minor in writing.
  3. Create your APAAR ID through DigiLocker.
  4. Keep each semester's mark sheet; credits follow you through ABC.
  5. Compare fees for every year, not just the first.
