Class 11 to College Admission: A Parent's Month-by-Month Plan

By Eduvy Editorial · 25 September 2026 · Admission 2026

Start the paperwork in Class 11, register for entrance exams between August and March of Class 12, and keep June to September of the admission year free for counselling. That is the whole plan. Seats are often lost to a missed deadline, a certificate in the wrong format or a name that does not match across documents, not only to marks. Below are the calendar, the documents, a savings example and the warning signs, written for families sending a child to college for the first time.

How to read the timeline

The months below are typical, based on the 2025 and 2026 admission cycles. Exam bodies change dates every year, sometimes late: NEET UG 2026 was held on 3 May, cancelled, and held again on 21 June 2026, which pushed medical counselling back. Confirm every date on the official site: KEA (cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea), COMEDK (comedk.org), NTA (neet.nta.nic.in, jeemain.nta.nic.in, cuet.nta.nic.in), the Consortium of NLUs (consortiumofnlus.ac.in), NATA (nata.in), KSEAB and CBSE. For what each exam covers, see our entrance exams guide.

Documents to start in Class 11

These take weeks to fix, so start early. Most rows come from the KEA UGCET 2026 information bulletin.

Is your child a "Karnataka candidate" for KCET?

Government-quota seats through KEA go only to students who meet one of the eligibility clauses (a to o) in the bulletin. Most use clause (a): studied in government or recognised institutions in Karnataka for at least seven academic years between Class 1 and II PUC or Class 12, and passed SSLC/Class 10 or II PUC/Class 12 from Karnataka. Clause (b) covers students who did both PUC years in Karnataka with a parent who studied in Karnataka for seven years. Other clauses cover Kannadigas living outside the state, defence, central government and CAPF families, and a few more; students claiming clauses b to o get their documents verified by KEA. A student who fits none is a non-Karnataka candidate: not eligible for government-quota seats or reservation through KEA, apart from a few notified seats in some courses. COMEDK and national exams remain open.

Money planning: a worked savings example

Set a target from real numbers (first-year tuition, hostel and deposits for your shortlist; the Bangalore College Fee Index helps), then work backwards over the 24 months from the start of Class 11.

Target by admissionMonthly saving, no interestMonthly saving at 7% a year (illustrative)Interest earned (illustrative)
₹2,00,000₹8,333₹7,788₹13,092
₹3,00,000₹12,500₹11,682₹19,637
₹5,00,000₹20,833₹19,470₹32,729

The 7% rate is illustrative only (compounded monthly, before tax); real deposit rates differ. Worked example: a family that can save ₹10,000 a month for 24 months at that rate reaches about ₹2,56,810. If the target is ₹3,00,000, the gap is about ₹43,190. Close it in this order: scholarships and fee waivers (NSP, SSP, the SNQ quota), then the college's instalment options, then a loan. Compare education loans on the loans page, and test repayments on the EMI calculator before you sign.

The parent's role, without pressure

  1. One 20-minute planning talk a week, same day and time. Three questions only: what is due in the next 14 days, which document is pending, and what is worrying you. Marks and mock scores are not on the agenda.
  2. A shared calendar with every deadline and a reminder seven days before. Enter dates only from official sites.
  3. You own the paperwork. Certificates, RD numbers, name corrections, bank seeding and fee payments are the parent's job, so the student's time goes to study.
  4. One folder, two copies. Originals in one file folder; clearly named scans in one shared online folder.
  5. Plan A, B and C agreed in Class 11. Which exams, which courses, a fee ceiling. Results week is then a lookup, not a family argument.

Red flags: walk away if you see these

  • Anyone promising a seat for cash. KEA's own bulletin warns parents about touts who claim contacts in KEA. Seats are allotted by merit and the options you enter.
  • "Management quota confirmed" before results. Read how management quota really works in our management quota guide before paying anything.
  • Unrecognised colleges. Check approval with the regulator for the course (AICTE, NMC, INC, PCI, BCI or CoA) and check UGC's list of fake universities.
  • Pressure to pay full fees early without receipts, into a personal account, or with a "today only" deadline.
  • Requests for original certificates to "hold" a seat. Show originals for verification; hand over only attested copies unless admission is confirmed in writing.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child register for KCET?

In January or February of Class 12. KEA's 2026 application opened on 17 January, and the exam was on 23 and 24 April. Watch the KEA website from December.

We moved to Karnataka when my child was in Class 8. Is my child a Karnataka candidate?

Count the years. Class 8 to Class 12 is five academic years, and clause (a) needs seven, so clause (a) does not apply. Check clause (b), which works if both PUC years are in Karnataka and one parent studied in Karnataka for seven years, and the other clauses in the KEA bulletin.

Which documents take the longest?

Caste and income certificates in the right form, and Aadhaar name corrections. Start both in Class 11 and check validity dates again before the January registrations.

What do KEA's Choice 1, 2, 3 and 4 mean?

After each allotment you pick one. Choice 1: accept, pay, join and leave counselling; this is final. Choice 2: hold the seat and try for a better one next round (if a better one is allotted, the old seat goes automatically). Choice 3: give up the seat and try again next round. Choice 4: leave counselling.

My child studies in CBSE. Is anything different for KCET?

Yes, one step. KEA collects Class 12 marks for CBSE, CISCE and other-board students through an auto-fetch or marks entry link after board results. Watch for the notice from late April and complete it before the deadline.

For the admission steps themselves (shortlisting, fee structures, applying), read how to get admission in a Bangalore college, and see the KCET page for exam details. On the Eduvy student app you can compare colleges, courses and year-wise fees, apply to several colleges from one profile, and see Easy EMI and education-loan options in one place.
