Moving to Bangalore for College: A First-Semester Guide

By Eduvy Editorial · 25 September 2026 · Latest News & Stories

Your first semester in Bangalore goes smoothly when three things are settled before classes start: a place to live that you have inspected in person, a written monthly budget, and a first-week list covering your bank account, phone, emergency numbers and the anti-ragging undertaking. Each is below as a table or checklist, with the Kannada phrases and scam warnings that matter in month one.

Hostel, PG or shared flat: how they compare

For most first-year students: a college hostel if you can get a seat, a well-run PG near campus if not, and a shared flat from second year.

PG inspection checklist

The city corporation (then BBMP) issued PG safety guidelines in August 2024: CCTV at all entry points, round-the-clock security, at least 70 sq ft per resident, fire safety clearance, and an FSSAI licence where food is served. In a 2025 newspaper check, five of ten PGs called did not even ask for ID. Check for yourself.

  • Fire exits: a second way out on every floor, no locked grille on the only staircase, extinguishers with a current refill tag.
  • CCTV: cameras at every entrance and a working monitor you can see.
  • Night security: someone on site after dark, not a manager who leaves at 7 pm.
  • Police verification: the owner should take your ID and verify cooks and guards. If nobody asks for your ID, nobody else was checked either.
  • Agreement and receipts: all terms on paper; pay only into an account in the owner's or business's name.
  • Food: see the kitchen, eat one meal, ask for the weekly menu and the FSSAI licence number.
  • Wi-Fi: run a speed test in your room around 9 pm.
  • Laundry: washing machine access, or the price per load.
  • Curfew: the exact time, and the rule when a lab runs late.
  • Space and locks: 70 sq ft per person, storage, a working lock on the door and cupboard.
  • Distance at peak hour: make the trip to campus at your real class time on a weekday. Ten minutes at noon can be forty at 8.30 am.

Monthly budget template

Fill in your own numbers. We have not printed "typical" rent or food costs because they vary too much by area; reference points are dated official or reported figures.

ItemYour monthly figure (₹)How to estimateReference point
Rent____Written quotes from three places near campus; note if meals are includedNone
Food outside the mess or PG____Meals not covered per week × cost per meal × 4.3None
Transport____Bus: pass cost ÷ months covered. Metro: one-way fare × 2 × college daysBMTC ordinary monthly pass ₹1,200 (Jan 2025). Metro ₹11 to ₹95 a trip (Feb 2026)
Phone and data____Plan price ÷ months of validityNone
Books, printing____Ask two seniors what a semester cost, divide by 6None
Laundry____Loads per week × price per load × 4.3None
Personal and health____Track two weeks, double it, add regular medicinesNone
Emergency buffer____About 10% of the rows above, in a separate account (a rule of thumb)None
Total____Compare with what your family can send each month

Worked example: a ₹40 one-way metro fare over 22 college days costs ₹40 × 2 × 22 = ₹1,760 a month, before the smart card discount. Budget separately for one-time costs: deposit, bedding, lock, bucket, extension board and books.

BMTC student pass and Namma Metro

  • Apply: college students apply on the Seva Sindhu portal (Aadhaar login) with BMTC's form signed and sealed by the institution, the year's fee receipt and a photo. Applying yourself is free; BangaloreOne staff charge ₹30.
  • Collect: after approval, book a BangaloreOne slot and pay there by cash, card or UPI. BMTC's 2026-27 page calls the pass free but its procedure note mentions "the requisite pass amount", so confirm your amount when you book.
  • Free travel: under the Shakti scheme, girl and transgender students with Karnataka domicile travel free in BMTC ordinary buses.
  • Lost pass: police complaint plus ₹150 for a duplicate. Damaged pass or route change: ₹100 at the Kempegowda Bus Station pass counter.
  • Metro: ₹11 to ₹95 by distance since a 5% revision on 9 February 2026, with revisions now every February. Buy QR tickets on the official Namma Metro app or WhatsApp service, or use a smart card for a discount.

First-week checklist

  1. Open a bank account with Aadhaar, PAN (or Form 60) and a photo. Banks must offer a Basic Savings Bank Deposit account with no minimum balance, and many have zero-balance student accounts; compare charges, not freebies. Under 18? RBI lets banks allow minors aged 10 and above to run an account on their own, on the bank's terms. Get it seeded with Aadhaar: Karnataka's scholarship portal pays only into Aadhaar-seeded accounts.
  2. Set up UPI on the account's registered mobile number. Keep the PIN private; you never enter it to receive money.
  3. Decide on your SIM. Most Indian plans no longer charge for national roaming, so your home number usually works; test the signal in your room.
  4. Register your local address with the college, along with a local guardian's number, and keep a copy of your rent agreement.
  5. Save emergency numbers (below) and install the Bengaluru City Police's Suraksha SOS app or the Karnataka State Police (KSP) app.
  6. Find the nearest 24-hour hospital and a clinic you can walk to.
  7. Anti-ragging: under the UGC Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009, you and a parent file an online undertaking at antiragging.in and forward the confirmation email to the college. Note your college's anti-ragging committee and squad contacts.
  8. Health cover: ask if the fee includes group health or accident insurance and get the cashless hospital list. If not, confirm your family policy covers you and save the e-card.

Language and culture: Kannada you will actually use

English and Hindi work in most of Bangalore, but a little Kannada changes how shopkeepers, drivers and PG staff respond.

  • Calling a driver or shopkeeper anna (elder brother) or akka (elder sister) is normal and friendly.
  • Try Kannada first, even badly, and switch languages without fuss. Never mock anyone's accent or language.
  • 1 November is Karnataka Rajyotsava, the state's formation day and a public holiday.

Money safety: scams that target new students

ScamHow it looksWhat to do
Fake PG depositGreat photos online, an "owner" who cannot meet you, a token advance to "block" the roomPay nothing before seeing the room and meeting the owner, and only against a receipt
Task-based part-time jobWhatsApp or Telegram offer to like videos or rate places; small payouts, then a demand to "invest"No real job asks you to pay. I4C, the government's cybercrime centre, has had over 100 such websites blocked
Courier or "digital arrest" callA fake officer says a parcel in your name holds drugs, keeps you on video call and demands moneyHang up. Police, CBI, ED, customs and judges do not arrest anyone over a video call
Renting out your account or SIMEasy money to "use" your bank account, UPI ID or SIMRefuse. Such accounts get frozen and the holder can face police action
OTP or KYC call"Your scholarship or KYC is pending, share the OTP"Never share an OTP or PIN

If you lose money, call 1930 at once and complain at cybercrime.gov.in; early reports give the best chance of freezing it. Report fraud calls and messages through Chakshu on the Sanchar Saathi portal.

For parents: what to check on the first visit

  • Travel from the PG or hostel to the classroom at the real class time on a weekday.
  • Meet the owner or warden, exchange numbers, and ask how residents and staff were verified.
  • Read the agreement before anyone signs, photograph it, and check the deposit refund terms.
  • Eat one meal there, and test the room lock, window grilles, fire exit and CCTV monitor.
  • At the college, note the anti-ragging committee and student counsellor contacts.
  • Agree on a fixed monthly transfer date, the emergency buffer, and one weekly call.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PG or a college hostel better for a first-year student?

A college hostel, if you can get a seat: security, rules and food are the college's responsibility. Choose a PG only after inspecting it with the checklist above.

How much money does a student need per month in Bangalore?

It depends mostly on rent and whether meals are included, and both vary by area. Fill in the template with real quotes rather than averages. For tuition and hostel fees by college, see the Bangalore College Fee Index.

Can students from other states get a BMTC student pass?

Ask your college office first, because the institution certifies every application. Shakti free travel covers only girl and transgender students with Karnataka domicile. Otherwise, use BMTC's general passes: ₹80 a day or ₹1,200 a month for ordinary buses (January 2025 rates).

What should I do if I am ragged or see ragging?

Tell your college's anti-ragging committee or squad, and call 1800-180-5522 or email helpline@antiragging.in. Keep dates, names and screenshots.

I paid a deposit to a fake PG listing. Can I get it back?

Possibly, if you act fast. Call 1930, report at cybercrime.gov.in the same day, and inform your bank. Keep screenshots of the listing, chats and payment.
