Nursing Jobs Abroad After BSc: The Real Route to the Gulf and UK
By Eduvy Editorial · 25 September 2026 · Latest News & Stories
A BSc Nursing from an INC-recognised college in Karnataka can get you a nursing job in the Gulf or the UK. Under current rules a BSc nurse can apply for a UAE or UK licence with no work experience, while Saudi Arabia asks for at least one year and Qatar for two. The route is fixed: state council registration, a licensing exam, verification of every certificate and, for Gulf jobs, emigration clearance on eMigrate. A GNM diploma closes or narrows several of these routes.
Choose the course and the college with the exit in mind
Overseas regulators check which qualification you hold, where you studied and whether the course had real clinical training. All three are decided when you pick your course.
| Country | With a BSc Nursing | With a GNM diploma |
|---|---|---|
| UAE (DHA, DOH, MOHAP) | Registered Nurse title, no experience required | Licensed as Assistant Nurse, who cannot work independently and must work under a Registered Nurse |
| Qatar | Registered Nurse after 2 years' experience | Accepted for Registered Nurse if the diploma was 3 years after 12 years of school, with the same 2 years' experience |
| Saudi Arabia | Eligible for the Saudi Nursing Licensure Examination (BSN or equivalent) | The exam guide lists a BSN or equivalent; check your options on Mumaris+ before paying anyone |
| Oman | The OMSB nurses' exam lists a bachelor's in nursing as the eligibility | Not eligible for that exam as published |
| UK | Apply once you can register in India | The NMC checks that your qualification lets you register in India and assesses each application |
If you have Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12 and can manage the extra year, BSc is the safer choice for working abroad.
Five checks before you pay an admission fee
- INC list for your year. The Indian Nursing Council publishes its list of nursing institutions by academic year (the current list covers 2025-26 and 2026-27). Your college must be on it for your year of admission.
- State council and university. The college should be recognised by the Karnataka State Nursing Council and affiliated to a recognised university (RGUHS for most colleges in Karnataka). Every overseas regulator asks for your state registration.
- Regular, full-time study. The UAE's rules do not count correspondence or distance-learning qualifications, and Qatar does not accept online or distance nursing programmes.
- Clinical training on paper. UAE authorities judge "the duration and content of study and the presence of clinical practice" and require your transcript. Ask whether the college's transcripts show clinical hours, and how quickly it answers verification requests.
- A real attached hospital. Licensing exams test clinical judgment, and weak postings also make it harder to land a good first job.
Country comparison: what each regulator asks for
| Country | Licensing body | Exam | Minimum experience after qualifying | English test | Document verification | Timing (official figures) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | DHA (Dubai), DOH (Abu Dhabi), MOHAP (other emirates), under one shared rulebook (PQR, 3rd version, April 2025) | The authority's computer-based test, in English. 3 attempts across the authorities | None for a BSc Registered Nurse. You need a valid Indian registration and a good standing certificate under 6 months old | Not required on the standard route | Primary source verification (PSV) by a third-party agency, commonly DataFlow | DHA registration is valid for 1 year and must be activated by an employer |
| Saudi Arabia | Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), via Mumaris+ | Saudi Nursing Licensure Examination (SNLE) at Prometric centres, including abroad | At least 1 year for non-Saudis | Not listed in SCFHS classification requirements | Third-party verification (DataFlow) of qualifications, experience and registration | SCFHS lists 30 working days for the exam service; results within 14 working days |
| Qatar | Ministry of Public Health, Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP) | Prometric qualifying exam (exempt if you passed NCLEX within 5 years) | 2 years after registration as a Registered Nurse | Not listed in DHP nurse guidelines | PSV report from a verification company | 15 working days to review a complete application |
| Oman | Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) | Omani Examination for Nurses, 100 MCQs, at Pearson VUE centres worldwide | Not stated in the exam booklet; check each vacancy | Not listed | Confirm with the employer | Results emailed within 24 hours of the exam |
| UK | Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) | Test of Competence: CBT (at centres worldwide) plus OSCE (in the UK) | None. The NMC removed its 12-month wait in 2018 | IELTS Academic 7 in listening, reading and speaking, 6.5 in writing; or OET B in listening, reading and speaking, C+ in writing. Scores valid 2 years | NMC contacts your Indian regulator directly | NMC aims for 14 days on eligibility and 30 days for the final decision; you get 2 years to finish |
| USA | State boards of nursing; exam run by NCSBN | NCLEX-RN (Pearson VUE centres in India) | Not an NCLEX requirement | For VisaScreen: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 7.0 speaking, or OET 300 in reading, writing, listening and 350 in speaking | Credentials evaluation (for example CGFNS, now TruMerit) as your state board requires, plus VisaScreen | No fixed figure; immigrant visa waits for Indian nationals can run to years (see the US Visa Bulletin) |
Three things the table does not show. The experience figure is the minimum for a licence, not a job; many Gulf hospitals still prefer experienced nurses. Under UAE rules, a gap in practice of over 3 years means extra CPD credits and supervised training, and over 5 years blocks non-UAE nationals. And NCLEX helps beyond the USA: Qatar exempts recent passers from its exam, and the UAE accepts it as exam equivalency. Kuwait and Bahrain also recruit Indian nurses, but we could not find their rules published in full, so ask the employer in writing.
The path, step by step
| Stage | When | What happens | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc, years 1 to 3 | During the course | Theory plus clinical postings; build English | Keep every marks card and posting record |
| Final year and internship | Year 4 | Intensive clinical practice as your syllabus prescribes | Get the internship completion certificate |
| State registration | Right after results | Register with the Karnataka State Nursing Council; enrol on INC's Nurses Registration and Tracking System | Qatar counts experience only after registration, so do not delay |
| Experience in India | 0 to 2+ years | Salaried clinical job in a hospital | UAE rules do not count teaching or non-clinical work. Get letters with dates, unit and registration number |
| English test | Before applying to UK or USA | IELTS Academic or OET | NMC accepts scores for 2 years only |
| Licensing exam | Once eligible | DHA/DOH/MOHAP test, SNLE, Prometric (Qatar), OMSB, NMC CBT or NCLEX | Limited attempts; DHA blocks you for 2 years after a third fail |
| Document verification | Alongside the exam | DataFlow or similar checks degree, transcripts, registration and experience | A "discrepancy" result can end your application; never submit a bought certificate |
| Licence or eligibility letter | After exam and verification | Regulator issues registration or eligibility | DHA registration lapses after 1 year if no employer activates it |
| Job offer and contract | Often in parallel | Contract signed by employer, recruiting agent and you | No contract, no job |
| Visa | After the offer | Employment visa; UK nurses use the Health and Care Worker visa | Never travel for work on a visit visa |
| Emigration clearance | Before flying to a Gulf country | Clearance through eMigrate, plus Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana insurance | Mandatory for nurses going to ECR countries since 31 May 2015, whatever your passport says |
The ECR countries on the MEA list include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain. The UK and USA are not on it, so nurses going there do not need emigration clearance.

What to do in each year of your BSc
Year 1
- Confirm your college is on the INC list for your admission year and recognised by the Karnataka State Nursing Council.
- Apply for a passport, with your name spelt exactly as on your marks cards; verification agencies match them.
- Keep a file (paper and scanned) of every marks card, fee receipt and posting schedule.
Year 2
- Treat clinical postings as exam preparation. Keep a personal log of the procedures you see and do.
- Ask the college what your final transcript will show, including theory and clinical hours.
- Work on spoken and written English every week.
Year 3
- Pick a target country from the comparison table; it decides your English test and licensing exam.
- Take a timed practice test in IELTS or OET to see where you stand.
- Get Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; the UAE requires a valid BLS for nurses.
Year 4 and internship
- Ask for internship postings in the areas you want to work in abroad.
- Collect your internship certificate, provisional certificate and transcript before you leave.
- Apply for state registration as soon as results are out, and enrol on INC's NRTS.
- Choose a first job that gives salaried clinical work and proper experience letters. Avoid long gaps.
Fake recruiters: red flags and how to check an agent
The Ministry of External Affairs has warned that job seekers are being overcharged ₹2 to 5 lakh by unregistered agents who work mostly through Facebook, WhatsApp and text messages.
- The agent has no licence number, or it is missing from their office and ads.
- They want more than ₹30,000 plus GST, or cash without a receipt.
- They promise a "guaranteed" exam pass or an experience certificate from a hospital you never worked at.
- They ask you to travel on a tourist or visit visa and "convert" it later.
- There is no written contract signed by the employer, the agent and you.
- They only talk on WhatsApp and will not give an office address.
- Go to emigrate.gov.in and open the list of active recruiting agents. Check the name and licence number match.
- Ask for the employment contract before paying anything, and read the salary, hours and duration.
- Make sure your emigration clearance is issued through eMigrate before you board.
- Report problems on eMigrate or to the MEA's Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendra (toll-free 1800 11 3090 from India, helpline@mea.gov.in).
Government channels. When the MEA first restricted nurse recruitment for ECR countries in 2015, it named three state-run agencies: NORKA Roots and ODEPC (Kerala) and Overseas Manpower Corporation (Tamil Nadu). Karnataka runs the International Migration Centre Karnataka (IMC-K) under its Skill Development Department. Check each agency's current openings and eligibility rules.

Frequently asked questions
Can I work as a nurse in Dubai straight after BSc Nursing?
For the licence, yes. The UAE's current rules need no experience for a BSc Registered Nurse. You still need Indian registration, a recent good standing certificate, verification and the exam, and hospitals may prefer experience.
Is GNM accepted for nursing jobs abroad?
Partly. Qatar accepts a 3-year diploma for Registered Nurse with 2 years' experience. The UAE licenses diploma holders as Assistant Nurses. Oman's nurses' exam lists a bachelor's degree. The UK assesses each qualification.
Do nurses with an ECNR passport need emigration clearance?
Yes, for jobs in ECR countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman. Since 31 May 2015 nurses need clearance through eMigrate whatever their passport says. It is not needed for the UK or USA.
What IELTS or OET score do UK nurses need?
IELTS Academic 7 in listening, reading and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or OET grade B in listening, reading and speaking and C+ in writing. Scores are valid for two years.
How much experience do Saudi Arabia and Qatar ask for?
SCFHS asks non-Saudis for at least one year. Qatar asks for two years after registration as a Registered Nurse, so register with the state council immediately after results.
